Top Ten Tan Tips

Tanning at home is an easy, affordable task to perform, but if not done properly, or a decent product isn’t used, your tan can end with patches, spots, and a very uneven tan.

Sahara Soul is a luxury tanning range that is vegan, cruelty and paraben free. Here are my top ten tan tips when applying Sahara Soul to ensure you create the perfect, natural looking, fake tan.

#1 Exfoliate

Exfoliate, exfoliate, and exfoliate!!

Exfoliating ensures all dead skin cells are removed, which leaves for a nice, clean, surface for you to apply your tan onto. Make sure you avoid oily exfoliations, using gloves makes it that much better.

#2 Avoid Hair Removal

Avoid Hair Removal right before tanning.

Waxing and/or shaving should be carried out at least 24 hours before applying fake tan. This is to avoid bumps, marks, and a splotchy tan. Definitely don’t remove hair right after tanning either; it will rip the tan right off!

#3 Moisturise Carefully

Be careful moisturising.

The day you plan to fake tan, don’t wear deodorant or perfume. This can cause your tan to ‘catch’ and turn a different colour (usually green, yuck!) Moisturise your knees, elbows, and feet. This is so they don’t absorb the tan and turn out a darker colour to the rest of your body.

#4 Use a Mitt

Use a tanning mitt.

Always use a tanning mitt and apply in a sweeping motion. This will ensure the tan is applied evenly and reduces the likeliness of patches.

#5 Leave Face Till Last

Keep it simple on your face.

Leave the tan application to your face till last. Go over your face very gently with a mitt. You can always make it darker with makeup but you want to avoid looking orange.

#6 Careful of Dry Areas

Be gentle with knuckles and feet.

Sometimes tan can ‘catch’ onto the dry areas of your feet and knuckles and turn into a different colour. It is best to use leftover residue on the glove to do these areas on your body.

#7 House Tools Are Your Friend

If you don’t have help, use house tools.

I live alone, so tanning my back can be a pain. Although not ideal, I attach my mitt to a wooden spoon or an egg flip and tan my back in the mirror. I have yet to have a patchy back tan, but it is definitely more ideal to have a second pair of hands.

#8 Take Your Time

Slow and steady always wins the race.

You should dedicate at least half an hour to applying your fake tan, this will result in a smooth, and more even finish. This is to avoid streaky limbs at all costs!

#9 Wear Loose Clothes

Wear loose clothing after.

After you have applied your fake tan make sure you wear loose clothing to avoid the tan sticking to your clothes and creating patches.

#10 Time Your Shower

Shower at the right time.

I think tans develop the best after you have slept overnight after a shower. So if you are doing the tan the day before your event/occasion, leave it on for a few hours, shower, and then sleep. I think it gives the tan time to develop into a natural colour.
