We live in a world where we are so bombarded with external information. I am the first to live by the quote ‘knowledge is power and never stop learning.’ However what I have noticed over the past 10 years of working with people is that we have lost touch with ourselves. We have become addicted to searching outside of ourselves for answers; Google is at the touch of a button, so we don’t even have to think for ourselves anymore. We believe that we will be happy when we lose weight, find the perfect partner, earn more money, travel etc. until we realize that we can’t run away from our mind or emotions. All of those things can give you temporary boosts of joy (and are a necessary part of life), yet true sustainable happiness comes from doing the inner work. Becoming more aware of our beliefs, behaviours, our mental, physical and emotional health etc. can make our lives so much more fulfilling both internally and eternally.

TIP 1:

SMILE regularly, it’s the quickest way to lift you’re your mood. You cant’ feel angry and smile at the same time. Create a gratitude practice where you say or write down at least one thing you’re grateful for in your life each day. This can shift your perspective on any situation. There is so much in the world to be grateful for if we choose to look for it! (Grab a friend and every morning message each other what you’re thankful for.)

We are lucky enough in Australia to have so much choice, however the pressure to make the ‘right choice’ can lead us down the path of feeling overwhelmed, anxious and depressed. Your external world is a reflection of what’s going on internally, so if you don’t like what’s going on around you, change the way you’re looking at it. When we begin to feel calm, change the meaning we give situations and take responsibility for how we interpret our world, we can begin to feel more positive and in control, which helps making choices easier.

TIP 2:

Be more aware of your thoughts, if you notice that your mind is negative STOP, take a few deep breathes, bring yourself back to this present moment and choose a positive thought. The truth is the healing starts within, learning to face our inner fears and actually sit quietly with ourselves even when it feels really uncomfortable is when we begin to know who we truly are. Starting the inner journey for many people can be the scariest thing and hence why so many of us still turn to overeating, alcohol, drugs etc. to escape being with ourselves. And this is why so many people are still in the vicious cycle of self-sabotage and constant distraction.

TIP 3:

Learning how to feel your feelings will help you create a better relationship with yourself and others. Check in with yourself throughout the day and ask yourself how you’re feeling, take a moment to notice what’s going on inside and start to know yourself better. Spend time in nature, exercise to move your emotions through your body and breathe deeper (its free and is an easy way to help you to feel calm!) Feelings and thoughts are not real, they are always changing so it’s important to not let them control you. Find ways to get in touch with your intuition because that’s where the answer is. Knowing ways to express your truth with others is also a powerful part of creating a happier life. When we react, blame, judge others we are just adding more chaos to the situation.
